Proposal code: CONSUL-2022-06-6

My proposal is that each parking space should have a sensor which tells whether or not it is occupied, and this should be bookable over the internet

What I am proposing

Finding parking in town can be stressful and can discourage shoppers from visiting the town centre because they do not know whether they will be able to park. My proposal is to create a system of bookable parking spaces

How it will work

Technology could be used to work out whether a space is available. This space would be bookable over the internet. The booking system could even automatically send the location of the parking space to the car's Sat Nav system.

Why do this?

By making parking spaces bookable, people will know that they will be able to park and will be encouraged to visit the town centre.

Executive Summary: Overall, the sentiment towards the proposal of creating bookable parking spaces in town is mixed, with some concerns about privacy and restrictions, but also with strong support for the idea to reduce pollution and save time. Comments also highlight alternative suggestions like park and ride.

Key Themes & Voices:

  • Privacy Concerns: Some individuals express worries about being tracked by technology and the potential invasion of privacy.

"Robots are taking over the world. What about those people who don't want to be tracked by big brother?"

  • Efficiency and Environmental Benefits: Supportive comments emphasize the time-saving benefits of bookable parking spaces, reducing pollution, and saving fuel by driving directly to a reserved spot.

"What a genius idea. So much time is wasted driving round looking for a space. It would cut the amount of pollution caused by idling, and because you are going straight to your space you are driving fewer miles, therefore you will be saving on fuel as well."

  • Opposition to Increased Parking: Some feedback suggests a preference for fewer parking spaces or alternative transportation methods like park and ride to city centres.

"you should have less parking not more parking"

  • Alternative Suggestions: Comments propose alternative solutions such as implementing restrictions for non-booked spaces or encouraging the use of park and ride services.

"people should use park and ride instead of taking cars into city centres"

  • you could set it up so that if you haven't booked and paid for your space, the car's computer will refuse to drive in

    • that's all very well but for lots of people park and ride is too far away and too hard to get to. Then you have to wait for buses and can't come and go as you please
